ГСН АОМЗ ::

HOMING HEADS FROM AZOV.

The Azov Optical and Mechanical Plant Production Association - Federal State Unitary Enterprise is one of the Russian oldest manufacturers of homing heads, which are the basic component of high-precision weapons.

The first homing heads developed by the Geofizika Central Design Bureau headed by Chief Designer D. Khorol, Dr. Sc. (Technology), were transferred for production to the Azov Optical and Mechanical Plant in 1962. They were built around tubes and had limited possibilities for use. The plant had to master their production under complicated conditions, which included lack of specialists in precision mechanics, electronics, optics and an insufficient amount of space, production facilities and test equipment.

Within the past years, the plant built new production facilities (such as optical, galvanic and others), created a test base, established connections with enterprises manufacturing modern electronic elements and mastered the production of about ten various homing heads for air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles and air bombs. During this time, the electronic elements of items and their technical characteristics were radically changed.

The plant's large collective comprises qualified specialists - graduates of such educational establishments as the Moscow Bauman Higher Engineering School, the Leningrad Institute of Precise Mechanics and Optics, the Taganrog Radio Engineering Institute and others. At the initial stage, it was involved in mastering and production of homing heads developed by the Geofizika Central Design Bureau. In 1976, it began to develop high-level homing heads applying modern technologies, electronic elements and computers, first jointly with Geofizika and then independently.

Some types of homing heads produced by our plant are described below.

27N homing head

The 27N semiactive laser homing head of the feather type is a controlled air bomb head. It is intended to detect a target illuminated by a laser's beam during free fall of the bomb and to feed information on target location to the bomb control system in order to correct its trajectory with the aim of ensuring the required hit accuracy. The bomb fitted with the 27N homing head destroys bridges, airfield facilities, buildings, etc.

24N1 homing head

The 24N1 semiactive laser homing head is an air-to-surface missile head. It is intended to guide different types of missiles to such laser-illuminated targets as tanks, motor vehicles, bridges, aircraft hangars, etc.

The homing head feeds the missile control circuit with signals proportional to the absolute angular rate and bearing angles of the target via two channels.

36T homing head

The 36T heat homing head is an air-to-air missile head. It is intended to guide missiles to air targets. The homing head feeds the missile control circuit with signals proportional to the angular rate and bearing angles of the target via two channels. The homing head is fitted with a built-in circuit to ensure its jamming immunity to hot decoys.

Currently, the enterprise masters the production of quite new sophisticated special-purpose items, as well as science-intensive civil products and carries out work to upgrade homing heads so as to improve their guidance accuracy, increase the range of combat employment, update electronic elements, minimize dimensions and weight and to unify them with the aim of reducing their array.
